Feeling Confused About Findhorn Foundation?

written by Judy McAllister

Feeling confused about who or what the Findhorn Foundation is today?  It seems many people are.  If you are one of them please read on.

At the moment there are two Findhorn Foundations: The Findhorn Foundation Trust and its successor: the Findhorn Foundation SCIO.

In practice there are two Findhorn Foundations in existence just now.  The Findhorn Foundation Trust (FFT)- established in 1972 - which  is in the process of winding down and redistributing its assets.  And the Findhorn Foundation SCIO (FFS) is the successor of FFT and a more modern charitable structure. It was  established in 2022 and endeavoured to establish its starting-up base on the islands of Erraid and Iona throughout 2024.

In early 2025 FFS lost two key members of staff and a decision was taken to cancel planned programmes on Iona from June 2025 onwards.  Rather than simply close down the SCIO, the  FF SCIO trustees  approached the Education Circle with the idea of exploring the possibility of the SCIO being a vehicle for furthering the work of that circle.

The primary interest of the members of the Education Circle, who had been meeting regularly for 2+ years, was the exploration of where and how to support the continuation of the educational impulse, which had been a primary source of activity here for 50+ years.  That subsequently led to the appointment of five new FF SCIO  trustees in Oct/Nov of 2025.

The FF SCIO trustees are now exploring, in collaboration with other organisations within the Ecovillage Findhorn settlement, the viability of an education focused SCIO and its possible future viability.  It it a challenging and rich time for all concerned and we thank you for your interest and your concern.  Prayers, blessings and good wishes for an outcome that serves the highest and best for all concerned are heartily welcomed.

While the Findhorn Foundation Trust is winding down, the Findhorn Foundation SCIO is exploring how to offer workshops, retreats and events in the future.

Please read more about what is happening at Ecovillage Findhorn, on the Isle of Erraid and with the retreat house Traigh Bhan on Iona here.
