International Day of Yoga 2026: Yoga for Healthy Aging
written by Dr May East
In preparation for the UN International Day of Yoga on the 21st of June, and in recognition of our longstanding relationship with the United Nations, we are pleased to share this reflection from our colleague Dr May East. May reminds us that, at its heart, yoga is a practice of connection and interconnectedness — a perspective that resonates deeply with the values and lived experience of the Findhorn Ecovillage community, which can be experienced in all of our Core Programmes.
Yoga for Healthy Aging - The theme of this year’s International Day of Yoga
On 21 June, people around the world come together to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, recognising an ancient practice whose wisdom continues to offer guidance for contemporary life. Established by the United Nations in 2014, the Day invites us to explore yoga not simply as a form of exercise, but as a pathway towards balance, awareness, and connection.
The theme for the International Day of Yoga 2026, Yoga for Healthy Aging, highlights the important role yoga can play in supporting physical health, mental wellbeing, emotional resilience, and vitality throughout the course of our lives. As populations age across the globe, the theme reminds us that healthy aging is not merely about extending life, but about enhancing the quality of our years and nurturing our capacity to remain engaged, purposeful, and connected.
The word yoga derives from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to yoke” or “to unite”. At its heart, yoga is about relationship: the integration of body, mind, spirit, community, and the living Earth. This understanding of interconnectedness resonates deeply with the values and practices of the Ecovillage Findhorn Community.
Healthy Aging within the Ecovillage Findhorn Community
Moving sustainably through life’s transitions
For more than six decades, the Ecovillage Findhorn Community has explored what it means to live in conscious partnership with nature and with one another. Throughout its history, people of different generations have come together here to learn, work, create, reflect, and grow. The community itself offers a living example of aging as a shared journey, enriched by the exchange of experience, wisdom, curiosity, and care across generations.
Healthy aging is about more than maintaining physical mobility. It is about cultivating qualities that sustain us through life’s transitions: presence, adaptability, meaning, belonging, and a sense of connection to something larger than ourselves. These qualities have long been nurtured within the Ecovillage Findhorn Community through meditation, service, creative expression, time in nature, and community living.
Coming together to celebrate in a community of all ages at Ecovillage Findhorn means creative expression, connection to spirit, and spending time in nature.
The connection between personal and planetary wellbeing
The 2026 theme also invites us to consider the relationship between personal wellbeing and planetary wellbeing. Just as our bodies thrive through balance and harmony, so too do our communities and ecosystems. The regenerative principles embraced at Findhorn remind us that vitality emerges through healthy relationships — between people, places, and the natural world.
In this sense, yoga is not confined to a yoga mat. It can be experienced while tending a garden, walking mindfully along the Moray coast, participating in a community gathering, sharing a meal, or sitting quietly in contemplation. Yoga becomes a practice of paying attention, of listening deeply, and of responding to life with greater awareness.
As we celebrate the International Day of Yoga 2026, we honour the possibility of aging not as a process of decline but as a continuing journey of growth, contribution, and discovery. We recognise that every stage of life has its own gifts to offer and that practices which cultivate balance, flexibility, and inner peace can help us meet the future with greater confidence and grace.
Caring for ourselves, one another and the Earth
At Findhorn, we understand that transformation begins within and expresses itself through our actions in the world. On this International Day of Yoga, may we embrace the invitation to care for ourselves, care for one another, and care for the Earth — cultivating wellbeing that endures across generations.
For in nurturing healthy aging, we are also nurturing healthier communities, healthier ecosystems, and a more compassionate future for all.
Ten Meaningful Ways to Celebrate International Yoga Day 2026
Whether you are a lifelong practitioner or entirely new to yoga, International Yoga Day offers an opportunity to pause, reconnect, and cultivate wellbeing. Here are ten ways to celebrate this year’s theme, Yoga for Healthy Aging:
1. Welcome the Day with Sun Salutations
Begin the morning with a gentle sequence of Sun Salutations, honouring the summer solstice and the life-giving energy of the sun. Adapt the practice to suit your own abilities and stage of life.
2. Meditate in Nature
Find a quiet spot in a garden, woodland, beach, or park. Spend time simply observing, breathing, and listening. Nature has a remarkable capacity to restore balance and calm the Mind.
3. Join a Yoga Class
Participate in a local or online yoga session. Explore practices specifically designed to support mobility, balance, flexibility, and vitality as we age.
4. Practice Intergenerational Yoga
Invite people of different ages to practice together. Sharing movement and stillness across generations can strengthen community bonds and foster mutual learning.
5. Organise a Community Gathering
Bring friends, neighbours, or community members together for a simple yoga session, meditation circle, or reflective walk. Yoga is as much about connection as it is about individual practice.
6. Share Your Yoga Journey
Reflect on how yoga—or any practice of mindful awareness—has influenced your life. Share a story, photograph, or insight with others and inspire conversation about wellbeing and healthy aging.
7. Support Organisations Promoting Wellbeing
Consider supporting charities and community initiatives that make yoga, movement, and wellbeing accessible to older adults and underserved communities.
8. Explore a New Yoga Tradition
Discover a style of yoga you have never tried before, whether it is Hatha, Yin, Kundalini, Chair Yoga, Yoga Nidra, or a meditative movement practice. Every tradition offers its own gifts.
9. Bring Yoga into the Workplace
Organise a short workplace yoga or mindfulness session. Even a few minutes of stretching and conscious breathing can improve focus, reduce stress, and support long-term wellbeing.
10. Practice Yoga Beyond the Mat
Remember that yoga is ultimately a way of living. Approach the day with greater presence, kindness, gratitude, and care—for yourself, for others, and for the Earth. Every act of conscious connection is an expression of yoga.
This International Day of Yoga, may we celebrate the wisdom that healthy aging is not only about adding years to life, but about adding life to our years.
