The Song of the Earth – Mahler in Miniature

Friday 29th Apr 2016

Mahler group cropped Sam LeakeyThe acclaimed Mahler Players pay their first visit to Universal Hall with Mahler's oriental-inspired Das Lied von der Erde and, for this, the ensemble will be joined by mezzo-soprano Karina Lucas and tenor Luke Sinclair. In the first half the players will perform Webern's orchestration of Bach's Ricercar as well as his own Symphony Op. 21. A new commission by Stuart MacRae, originally from the Highlands himself, will complete what should be a thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking evening. The conductor is Tomas Leakey (photo: Sam Leakey)

"Here is a composer (Stuart MacRae) who knows how to write for orchestra: how to make its textures shimmer and growl …" The Guardian
