The Way of Clay – An Alchemical Journey

The Way of Clay – An Alchemical Journey

Sat 18 January 2020 (14 Days)
Gay Smith, supported by Craig Gibsone

As the wheel of the year turns from dark towards light, we’ll share a two-week personal journey into the mystery, simplicity and beauty of clay.
The simple acts of digging clay from the earth, shaping the clay as if touching it for the first time while sitting around an open fire, and then placing what we’ve formed directly into the living flames awakens ancestral memories.

Moving into the exploration of the world of contemporary ceramics fired to 1300 degrees Celsius, we’ll delve into hand building and pottery wheel techniques. We’ll work both practically and experientially with the processes of making objects from clay. Learning about ourselves in a communal setting along the way, we’ll make everything from functional objects such as cups and teapots, to evocative sculptural forms, and simple pinch pots. Each participant will be guided in practical techniques and skill building and how to embody sources of inspiration into expression through clay.

When you take clay and add just the right amount of water a magical, flexible medium comes alive, giving shape to your imagination and inspiration in a myriad of forms. As the clay slowly dries with the air, we continue our journey of expression by adding decorative details, handles and knobs, before our creations make their way to the kiln – where fire is gently tended and contained over two days to a white hot glowing alchemy of a wood kiln firing.
The two weeks are designed to take you on your own personal journey into the world of ceramics, deepening your relationship with the four elements, community, and the world of pottery-making.

No prior experience necessary.
