Building a new Education Facility

We are receiving more and more interest from a wide range of organisations working with people with special needs. Currently very few of our buildings can provide for even the simplest of these needs. We are therefore committed to a range of improvements and new facilities that will ensure that all are welcome here at Findhorn.

Our first step is to provide a fully accessible new education facility where we will be able to welcome everyone to a warm, comfortable environment in which to learn, share and fulfil their potential. This will replace a yurt (large tent) that we have been using but is now at the end of its lifespan.

In this new education facility we aim to provide the best in sustainable building techniques, using timber (a renewable resource), ensuring that the building has a low carbon footprint, minimal environmental impact, is highly energy efficient and will sit in harmony with nature within a newly landscaped beautiful garden.

The building will include:

  • wood construction using FSC certified timber
  • heating by air source heat pump
  • highest specification of double glazing
  • a rainwater collection system to supply the toilets
  • PV solar power system to supply the external LED lighting system
  • fully insulated to a high level using recycled materials where available
  • fully accessible with ramps, wide access doors, Braille signage and an induction loop
  • a newly landscaped area with aromatic and insect friendly plants and flowers

The manufacture and costs for the building are:

Site preparation and foundations £  5,000
Manufacture and delivery £33,209
Construction on site £  8,000
High level insulation £  1,000
Internal fixtures including plumbing and electrics £  2,000
Air source heat pump £15,000
External landscaping, ramps and decking £  1,350
Furnishings and carpets £  2,000
Total cost £67,559

The new education facility takes six weeks to manufacture and four weeks to build. We plan to have the building in place for Easter 2011, ready for our summer guest programme.
