Run For Your Life

JD_350s.jpg Jonathan Dawson, long time resident of the Findhorn Ecovillage and recent president of the Global Ecovillage Network www.ecovillage.org, is running for all our lives.

By participating in the London Marathon on 26 April Jonathan hopes to raise funds for two very worthy causes linked to the survival of humanity on this planet at both the global and local level.

Jonathan is part of the Global Ecovillage Team keen to be at Copenhagen in December 2009 for the United Nations Climate Change negotiations and is determined to raise the funds to be there. The GEN team will represent all of us, helping to ensure that the international agreement that replaces the Kyoto Protocol is as clear and as binding as necessary to avoid runaway climate chaos. Scientists are clear that the greenhouse gas emissions target is 350 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere and no more – it is currently 387ppm.

Visit www.350.org to read the inspiring campaign set for 24 October to galvanise the world into action as one voice calling for this 350ppm CO2 emission level. Farmers in Cameroon, students in China, even World Cup skiers have already helped spread the word about 350. Churches have rung their bells 350 times; Buddhist monks have formed a huge 350 with their bodies against the backdrop of the Himalayas. Findhorn plans to play a part. Watch this space!

Jonathan is also raising money to promote the importance of responding to the climate challenge from a local level. Half the funds raised will provide educational bursaries for young people to attend Findhorn’s conference Positive Energy 2: Building Bioregional Resilience, October 3 – 8, 2009.

This is a powerful and practical event to support as Positive Energy 1 had such a profound effect on participants and the community alike. Feedback included “the most fantastic life empowering conference I have ever been to”, “a soul stirring and motivating event at this crucial time in our planetary history” and “a mixture of realistic insights, spiritual support and paths to action”.

How wonderful that this crisis demands we wake up to the interconnectedness of individuals, nations and indeed, of all life. It is only a unified global movement that can create the political will to tackle climate change quickly and equitably.

Run, Jonathan, run.
