STRAWBALE HOUSE
(please note that the arrow
with the heading Strawbale House is actually pointed
at the Strawbale Shed.)
Called Solus and built in 2001-2, this is the first
straw construction in Scotland to be used as a family
home. It is a timber post and beam structure with straw
bales as cheap, local, renewable and highly effective
infill insulation, covered inside and out with lime
mortar which 'breathes', allowing moisture out and clean
air in. A gasfired boiler provides underfloor heating
and hot water.
