The film follows the journey of an American naval veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) who arrives home at the end of World War II unsettled and uncertain of his future – until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman), whose character is loosely based on L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology fame.
