Omar Afif, a Gnawa musician and dancer from Essaouria in Morocco, grew up listening to the sounds of the magical Gnawa music which is played on gembri (3-stringed lute) and krakeb (castanet). His performance combines Berber, Arabic and Islamic traditional song - trance music - in which phrases are repeated again and again until the audience are brought into a trance-like state.
