Jesus said, "Narrow is the gate that leads to life and few there are who enter it." The Zen Buddhist master Chao-Chou said that enlightenment is passing through a gateless barrier.
In this retreat we follow the mystics of the Christian, Buddhist and other traditions through this narrow gate, this gateless barrier.
We follow the mysterious process in which ego-based experience yields to a rich, interior experience of oneness. Seeing God in all things and all things in God, we experience the peace that surpasses all understanding.
This retreat is an informal but in-depth exploration of the ways in which the mystics help us find our way through the interior landscape of our own soul. Four phases of this inner journey will be explored:
- Learning to recognise and honour the subtle and intimate ways in which our heart has been awakened and accessed by an infinite mystery that is calling us to itself
- Discovering the ways in which meditation, prayer and the cultivation of humility, compassion and other fundamental attitudes constitute the interior path that draws us ever more inward toward the gate of transformation
- Arriving at the gate, discovering it is narrow in the paradoxical sense that only God and all that is of God passes through. As we learn to let go of everything that is not the true source of our security and identity, we pass with ease through the gate into God. We are surprised to discover we do not go anywhere, but we simply awaken to God who, from the beginning, has been passing through the gate into us
- Finally, we learn how each mystic helps us prepare for the life of love that blossoms as we pass through this gate
